Ryan Smith - Favorite Bands

It seems like everyone is getting into the website articles bandwagon. I have decided to write about my favorite bands.

The short summary: Starting around the ninth grade, I have always loved music. Over the years I liked new age, new wave rock and roll. Then I spent a few decades enjoying Philip Glass music, and now I am back to new age, new wave rock and roll.

My broad categories and how I generally rate them on a scale of 1 to 10

  • Classical 6/10
  • Country and western - 1/10
  • Foreign music - In my neighborhood, this was usually Mexican/Latin music. - 1/10
  • Gospel - 6/10
  • Heavy metal - guitar, drums, usually screaming vocal - 5/10
  • Jazz and blues - 1/10
  • New age - 8/10
  • New wave - guitar, drums, vocal, heavy keyboard usage - likely taking advantage of technologies and sound built into keyboard - aka alternative sounds - 10/10
  • Rock and roll - guitar, drums, vocal, some minor keyboards - 7/10

The rankings and categories are generally crude. For example “Charlie Daniel’s the devil went down to Georgia” could be considered country or rock and role, but in my book I rate this song 10/10.

When I was a kid, we had several radio stations characterized by top 10 and top 40. Basically they were playing the same music over and over. And in all likelihood I didn’t much care for either of those sorts of radio stations. I’d switch the radio to country, yuck. Then to foreign music, yuck. Then to religious - yuck and then back to the top 40.

When I got older. I’d buy an album, and listen to the whole album. My favorite song of the album likely did not match the song they would play on the radio. Then I’d buy another album. When I ran out of bands I would buy a movie sound track, and then purchase music from this bands of the some I liked.

Anyway. This is a collection of some of the bands I used to listen to.
