The Coffee Place's Joke Stack
New Orleans
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We enjoyed staying at Lu Lu's place. It warmed our hearts to see the selfless young women who lived at Lu Lu's working overtime to teach the men of New Orleans to read and write, although sometimes it got quite nosy, with screaming and moaning and other strange sounds all through the night.
Lu Lu explained that this was because the men were reading out loud and we agreed that it was worth the inconvenience if it helped stamp out illiteracy. From our base at Lu Lu's we were able to explore New Orleans at leisure. Sheryl Ann had her heart set on riding the streetcar named desire, from a movie she had seen with Marlon Brando when she was younger, and she was disappointed to find that it had been replaced by a diesel bus. She even got all dressed up in her Sunday finest like Vivien Leigh in the movie and went up and down Canal Street saying, "Whoever you are I have always relied on the kindness of strangers" to the folk passing by, who just gave her a funny look and kept walking. There was still a streetcar that ran down St. Charles Avenue and was preserved just as it was in 1930s, with wooden benches and a conductor, and it ran from The French Quarter to The Garden District, where there was were many lovely old homes and a zoo and a park. We hopped on and Sheryl Ann grabbed the bell and started ringing it and singing, "Clang, clang, clang went the trolley, ring, ring, ring, went the bell," but the conducter, who was obviously not a Judy Garland fan, said, "Don't you go ringing no bells and singing songs about St. Lou-ee in New Aw- leeans," and Sheryl Ann sat down and moped for the rest of the ride. When we got back home, Josephine had made a delicious meal that was followed by this dessert.
Josephine's Bread Pudding
1 large po-boy French bread (stale) cut into 2-inch cubes 1 cup raisins
1 large can Carnation milk 1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups whole milk 3 large eggs, beaten
1 cup sugar 1 4-ounce box vanilla instant pudding mix
1 stick butter
Place bread cubes in a buttered 3-quart Pyrex dish. Bring Carnation and whole milk to a boil. Remove from heat. Add butter and stir until melted. Add raisins. In a small bowl mix eggs and sugar. Add vanilla and pudding mix.
Stir well. Add this to mixture. Pour over bread cubes. Let stand 10 minutes.
Bake at 375 degrees until puffy and lightly browned. About 20-25 minutes.
(Should be moist.) Serve plain or topped with one of the following sauces.
